Davison, who has previously worked with both Joshua and Fury, is expected to play a role in Joshua’s training camp ahead of the December 11 heavyweight blockbuster in Cardiff.
The move adds another significant figure to Joshua’s corner as the former two-time unified heavyweight champion prepares for one of the biggest fights of his career. Davison has extensive experience working with Fury and is widely regarded within boxing circles for his tactical approach and understanding of the former WBC heavyweight champion.
Joshua has spent his most recent training camps working with Team Usyk, with Iegor Golub serving as his lead trainer. The partnership has produced two consecutive knockout victories, with Joshua defeating Jake Paul and Kristian Prenga during the past 10 months.
However, despite those victories, questions have remained over Joshua’s performances. His stoppage of Paul was criticised by some observers for taking longer than expected, while his contest against Albanian heavyweight Kristian Prenga raised further concerns after Joshua was knocked down twice before recovering to secure victory.
With Fury now standing between Joshua and one of the most significant prizes of his career, Hearn believes Davison’s knowledge of the ‘Gypsy King’ could prove particularly valuable during preparations.
Speaking in a clip captured by Pro Boxing Fans, Hearn confirmed that Davison would be involved in Joshua’s camp and praised the trainer’s credentials.
“Even when Ben wasn’t his principal trainer – he was just working with him – strategically, talking all of the time, I think he respects Ben a lot. Obviously, there is probably a feeling that Ben Davison knows Tyson Fury extremely well.
“For me, I think that he is one of the best trainers in the world. I don’t know AJ’s final decision as to where he is going to locate his training camp but Ben Davison will definitely be involved in that camp and in that process.”
Davison’s involvement could therefore give Joshua’s preparations an additional tactical dimension, particularly given his previous relationship with Fury.
The trainer worked with Fury during a crucial period of the heavyweight’s career before later becoming involved with Joshua. His familiarity with Fury’s style, habits and approach could make him a valuable addition to Joshua’s team as the December contest approaches.
It remains unclear, however, whether Davison will replace Golub as Joshua’s principal trainer or operate alongside him as part of a broader coaching team.
For Joshua, the Fury fight represents the latest chapter in a career that has included two world heavyweight title reigns, Olympic success and major victories over some of the division’s leading names. Fury, meanwhile, brings his own championship pedigree into a bout that has been anticipated by boxing fans for years.
With both men having previously held heavyweight world titles, their meeting in Cardiff is expected to attract enormous attention. Joshua’s decision to add Davison to his preparations now provides another intriguing subplot as both camps work towards fight night.
