Former France international Bacary Sagna has thrown his weight behind Paris Saint-Germain winger Khvicha Kvaratskhelia in the race for this year’s Ballon d’Or, placing the Georgian ahead of fellow PSG star and French superstar Kylian Mbappe.

Sagna, who enjoyed a distinguished career with Arsenal and Manchester City, believes Kvaratskhelia’s influence and performances over the past campaign make him the strongest candidate for the prestigious individual award.

The former defender was specifically asked whether Mbappe would be a deserving winner of the Ballon d’Or. While Sagna acknowledged the French forward by including him among his top three contenders, he ultimately opted for Kvaratskhelia as his preferred choice.

“For me, Kvara deserves the Ballon d’Or,” Sagna said, as quoted by GOAL.

“For me, Kvara [Khvicha Kvaratskhelia] has been phenomenal and being a winger, having such an impact and a successful campaign.

“Apart from winning the Champions League, I think football players will agree that Kvara was the most important player last season.”

Kvaratskhelia’s emergence as one of Europe’s most influential attacking players has strengthened his credentials for the award, with his ability to create chances, beat defenders and produce decisive moments making him a standout performer.

Sagna’s endorsement is particularly notable given Mbappe’s status as one of the leading names in world football. The Frenchman has consistently featured among the favourites for the Ballon d’Or, making Sagna’s decision to place Kvaratskhelia above his compatriot a significant statement.

Although Sagna stopped short of ruling Mbappe out of the competition, his comments underline just how highly he rates Kvaratskhelia’s contribution to PSG’s successful campaign.

With the Ballon d’Or winner set to be decided next month, the debate over the leading contenders is expected to intensify, with individual performances, major trophies and influence in decisive matches likely to shape the final outcome.
