Partnership aims to strengthen club finances, promote youth development and expand the detergent brand’s reach.
Rafa Corporation, the manufacturer behind the Rafa Detergents brand, has entered into a three-year shirt sponsorship agreement with Kano Pillars Football Club, in a partnership expected to strengthen the club’s commercial operations while supporting youth development and the growth of Nigerian football.
The agreement, unveiled in Kano under the theme, “Together for a Stronger Tomorrow,” featured the presentation of three new official Kano Pillars jerseys carrying the Rafa brand logo.
According to a statement issued by Rafa Corporation on Thursday, the partnership is designed to deepen the company’s connection with consumers, reinforce its commitment to Nigerian sports and create opportunities for young people through football.
The agreement was signed by Alhaji Kabiru Rabiu, Chairman of Rafa Corporation and Group Executive Director of BUA Group, and Alhaji Ahmed Musbahu Garo, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Kano Pillars Football Club.
Speaking at the unveiling, Rabiu described the partnership as a natural alignment between a Nigerian manufacturing company and a football institution with deep cultural and sporting significance.
“We are very excited to form this partnership with Kano Pillars,” he said.
Rabiu noted that the club’s extensive fan base, longstanding place in Kano’s identity and contribution to Nigerian football made it an attractive partner for the company.
He observed that support for Kano Pillars often begins in childhood and develops into a lifelong attachment, particularly among people born and raised in the state.
According to him, football offers more than entertainment, serving as a platform for bringing young people together, encouraging discipline and friendship, and fostering a shared sense of purpose.
He added that Rafa’s involvement would go beyond brand visibility to supporting the club’s development and helping extend its reach across Nigeria and beyond.
Partnership builds on previous relationship
Rabiu recalled that Rafa had supported Kano Pillars around 2013, describing the latest agreement as a renewal of an existing relationship and an opportunity to build a stronger, long-term collaboration.
He also commended Kano State Governor, Engr. Abba Kabir Yusuf, for his continued support for the club and commitment to youth empowerment and human capital development.
The three-year sponsorship represents a fresh commercial opportunity for Kano Pillars as Nigerian football clubs increasingly seek private-sector partnerships to strengthen their financial positions, improve operations and reduce reliance on public funding.
Welcoming the agreement, Garo described the deal as one of the significant achievements of his tenure and a step towards building a stronger commercial foundation for the club.
“We are very happy with this partnership as the State Government encourages Kano Pillars to be financially self-sufficient,” he said.
Garo expressed appreciation to Rafa Corporation for its support, noting that private-sector investment would help the club reduce its dependence on government funding and direct more resources towards long-term development.
He said stronger commercial partnerships could also support the club’s academy programmes and provide a more sustainable foundation for sporting success.
Garo expressed optimism that the agreement would inject fresh momentum into the team and contribute to a successful season.
Rafa, Kano Pillars explore football academy
Beyond the shirt sponsorship, the partnership could extend into grassroots football development, with discussions underway on the proposed establishment of a Rafa Football Academy in collaboration with Kano Pillars.
Rabiu disclosed that the proposed academy would focus on identifying and nurturing promising young footballers through structured coaching, discipline and professional development opportunities.
The initiative, if realised, would provide a pathway for emerging talents to progress through Kano Pillars, earn opportunities with national teams and pursue professional careers abroad.
However, Rabiu clarified that discussions remained at an early stage, while expressing optimism about the academy’s potential to create lasting opportunities for young people and deepen the relationship between the two organisations.
The proposed initiative would add a youth development dimension to the sponsorship, potentially extending the partnership beyond commercial visibility into talent identification and football education.
For Kano Pillars, an academy could help strengthen its player development pipeline, while Rafa would have an opportunity to associate its brand with youth empowerment and the wider development of Nigerian sport.
Kano Pillars' legacy and ambitions
Founded in 1990, Kano Pillars remains one of Nigeria’s most recognisable football clubs, with a history of domestic success and a passionate following across Kano State and other parts of the country.
The club, popularly known as Sai Masu Gida, has won four national league titles, in 2008, 2012, 2013 and 2014, including three consecutive championships between 2012 and 2014.
Its honours also include the 2019 Federation Cup and a semi-final appearance in the 2009 CAF Champions League.
The club’s support base is closely associated with the Sani Abacha Stadium in Kano, although its following extends well beyond the state.
Kano Pillars' strong regional identity and established place in Nigerian football provide a platform for commercial partnerships seeking to connect with a loyal and extensive fan base.
The club has also made an encouraging start to the 2026/27 Nigeria Premier Football League season, remaining unbeaten through its opening six matches and occupying fifth position following its October 3 fixture.
The new sponsorship arrives at a time when clubs are looking to strengthen their commercial structures, diversify income sources and improve their capacity to compete consistently.
Rafa expands manufacturing ambitions
The partnership also comes as Rafa Corporation advances its investment programme aimed at establishing a major presence in Africa’s home and personal care market.
Through Starium Detergents FZE, the company operates a powder detergent manufacturing facility in Alaro City, Epe, Lagos, with an annual production capacity of 80,000 tonnes.
Since commencing production in 2024, the facility has supported Rafa’s efforts to expand its manufacturing operations, maintain consistent product quality and build its presence in the detergent market.
The sponsorship of Kano Pillars provides the company with an additional platform to increase brand visibility and engage consumers through football, one of Nigeria’s most widely followed sports.
By linking its commercial ambitions with a club that enjoys strong community support, Rafa is positioning the partnership as more than a branding arrangement, with potential opportunities in youth development and broader community engagement.
For Kano Pillars, the agreement offers an opportunity to strengthen its relationship with the private sector as it pursues greater financial independence and sustained sporting success.
The success of the collaboration will depend on how effectively both parties translate the sponsorship into tangible commercial benefits, stronger club operations and meaningful opportunities for emerging football talent.
