The Batman Trailer Teases Catwoman and the Riddler

The Batman trailer finally arrived this weekend giving fans a first look at Robert Pattinson as the Caped Crusader, while introducing the rest of the star-studded cast.

The teaser trailer debuted during the DC FanDome event on Saturday and, at over two minutes long, reveals what direction R-Patz will be taking in his first stint as Bruce Wayne.

Setting the moody tone with Nirvana’s Something In The Way as the soundtrack, the trailer opens with a dead man’s head being duct taped with the words ‘no more lies’ written in blood.

Commissioner Gordon (Jeffery Wright) arrives at the murder scene and reads out the first of The Riddler’s (Paul Dano), well, riddles which he left for Batman.

From your secret friend. Who? Haven’t a clue. Let’s play a game,’ the note reads before a full-on cat-and-mouse chase with The Riddler ensues.

Enter Pattinson in full Batsuit and as regular Bruce Wayne, saving civilians from a blast and coming face-to-face with the new Catwoman (Zoe Kravitz).

Towards the end, Batman is confronted by a group of thugs with white paint on their faces. One of them asks: ‘Who the hell are you supposed to be?’ to which Batman grunts: ‘I’m vengeance.’

As he removes his Batsuit, a mysterious voice is heard saying: ‘How am I part of this? You will see.’

During a DC FanDome panel, director Matt Reeves explained that The Batman will not be an origin film but will begin in Year Two of the character’s story. This is when Catwoman, the Riddler and the Penguin (Colin Farrell) are still in their early stages of development.

It’s also the era when Batman begins to uncover the corruption within Gotham City and how it links back to the wealthy Wayne family, Variety reports.

The Batman began shooting in February with much of the production taking place in London. However, it was halted in March due to the coronavirus pandemic with stars including Zoe Kravitz stuck in the UK due to travel restrictions. Filming has since resumed with stunt doubles seen filming scenes wearing the Batsuit and riding the Batmobile.

Farrell, who plays the Penguin, recently teased the anticipated Batman installment and praised Reeves’ script.

‘The whole prospect is really exciting. I’m ecstatic to be part of that universe,’ the actor told SFX.

‘There are certain words that are part of my internal lexicon and those words are Gotham City, Penguin, Joker, Batman, Bruce Wayne, Harvey Dent… all of those things. I have been watching the Batman films with my kids, but this script is something that feels incredibly original.’

He continued: ‘It leans into it but it doesn’t borrow; it’s born of the mythology of that character, Bruce Wayne, Batman and Gotham. But it feels like a treatment and a version that I hadn’t seen before.

‘Matt Reeves has done an incredible job of keeping it familiar and at the same time unique and new. It’s really exciting to be a part of it.’

The Batman is set for release on October 1, 2021.
