Wonder Woman 1984 Debuting In 4K On HBO Max

Wonder Woman 1984 will be the first 4K HDR title on HBO Max, bringing the fledgling streaming service up to speed in time for its biggest release, arriving on Christmas Day.

When it was announced a few weeks back that Wonder Woman 1984 was finally being released in the US on December 25 simultaneously at the cinema and on HBO Max, AV fans immediately decried the idea that such a massive movie would be making its bow on a streaming platform that infamously still didn’t support either 4K resolution or high dynamic range video.

It’s now been revealed, though, by WW84 director Patty Jenkins no less, that her film is going to become the very first title to be made available in 4K HDR on HBO Max.

In fact, in a tweet posted at 14:51 (ET), Jenkins confirmed that Wonder Woman 1984 would be available on HBO Max not just in 4K Ultra HD and HDR10, but also in Dolby Vision with a Dolby Atmos soundtrack.

Including support for Dolby Vision (which adds extra scene by scene picture information compatible TVs can use to deliver better picture quality) and the ultra-immersive Dolby Atmos three-dimensional sound format means the WW84 HBO Max stream ticks pretty much all the boxes US AV fans could have hoped for.

Jenkins is a famously vocal advocate for the cinema experience, so it’s not surprising that she ended the Tweet in which she revealed the new technical prowess HBO Max was introducing for her film by saying “PLEASE find the biggest and highest quality screen you can!!”. With the global pandemic seemingly having persuaded Warner Brothers that it had no choice but to finally get the film out before 2020 was over, though, it must be a relief to Jenkins – and the legions of fans desperate to see her film – to know that it will at least be appearing on the small screen in such a high quality presentation.

Looking beyond HBO Max’s big Wonder Woman moment, you’ve got to hope that it will open the service’s 4K/HDR/Dolby Atmos floodgates and see HBO’s high quality catalogue of movies and shows (including, potentially, Game Of Thrones) finally starting to become available in the sort of technical quality they deserve.
