Sony Pictures has given movie fans a first glimpse of the next chapter in the blockbuster Jumanji series, unveiling the official trailer for "Jumanji: Open World," the highly anticipated third installment in the rebooted franchise.

The newly released teaser reunites the franchise's familiar faces, with Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Jack Black and Karen Gillan returning to lead the action-packed adventure that has become synonymous with the modern Jumanji films.

The upcoming movie follows the commercial success of "Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle" (2017) and "Jumanji: The Next Level" (2019), both of which proved to be major box office hits. Together, the two films generated more than $1.7 billion globally, cementing the reboot as one of Sony's most successful film franchises in recent years.

The rebooted series reimagined the beloved 1995 classic, which starred the late Robin Williams alongside a then-13-year-old Kirsten Dunst. Rather than centering on the magical board game featured in the original film, the newer movies transported audiences into a video game world, where a group of teenagers assumed the identities of in-game avatars portrayed by Johnson, Hart, Black and Gillan.

With the core cast returning, Jumanji: Open World is expected to continue the franchise's winning formula of high-energy action, comedy and body-swap adventures that have resonated with audiences worldwide.

Several fan-favourite cast members are also making a return, including Danny DeVito, Nick Jonas, Awkwafina, Marin Hinkle, Bebe Neuwirth, Lamorne Morris and Rhys Darby. The latest installment will also introduce Dan Hildebrand and Jack Jewkes to the expanding ensemble.

Behind the camera, Jake Kasdan returns to direct after overseeing the first two reboot films. He co-wrote the screenplay with Jeff Pinkner and Scott Rosenberg. The production team includes Matt Tolmach, Dwayne Johnson, Dany Garcia, Hiram Garcia and Kasdan.

Sony has also adjusted the film's release schedule. Originally slated to premiere on December 11, Jumanji: Open World will now arrive in cinemas on Christmas Day, positioning it for one of the year's most competitive holiday movie seasons.

The revised release date means the film will hit theaters shortly after the highly anticipated debuts of "Dune: Part Three" and "Avengers: Doomsday," both scheduled for December 18. The convergence of the three major releases has already sparked excitement among movie enthusiasts, with fans informally dubbing the holiday box office clash "Dunesday."

With its star-studded cast, returning creative team and a prime Christmas release, Jumanji: Open World is expected to be among the biggest theatrical releases of the holiday season as Sony looks to build on the franchise's impressive global success.
