The disruptions affected Delta’s Lagos-Atlanta service, with passengers facing repeated changes to their travel arrangements and uncertainty over when they would finally reach their destinations.
The affected flight, identified as DL9895, operating from Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, to Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, was originally scheduled to depart on Sunday, August 23, 2026.
What initially appeared to be a technical delay subsequently developed into a nearly three-day ordeal after the airline cancelled the original flight and later disrupted the rescheduled service.
According to accounts from affected passengers and communications from Delta, the August 23 flight was initially cancelled following a mechanical issue identified during pre-departure safety checks.
Passengers were subsequently informed that the service would be rescheduled after the aircraft underwent the required maintenance and safety checks.
However, on August 25, travellers were once again confronted with a cancellation, further extending the disruption and leaving many unsure of when they would be able to continue their journey.
In a notification sent to affected passengers, Delta attributed the latest cancellation to “crew availability constraints.”
The message from the airline read: “We are sorry. Your flight DL9895 from Lagos (LOS) – Atlanta (ATL) was cancelled due to an issue that limited crew availability.”
The repeated cancellations have reportedly forced some passengers to make fresh hotel and accommodation arrangements, with concerns mounting over additional expenses arising from the prolonged delay.
The disruption is particularly significant because Atlanta serves as one of the world's major international aviation hubs and is a key connecting point for passengers travelling onward to various cities across the United States.
A missed arrival in Atlanta can therefore have a domino effect, potentially causing travellers to miss connecting flights and incur additional expenses for new tickets, accommodation, meals and transportation.
Under applicable passenger-protection rules, airlines may be required to provide assistance to passengers stranded overnight as a result of operational disruptions, including accommodation, transfers and meals where the relevant conditions are met.
Affected travellers may also have options to be re-routed on the next available flight, including through partner airlines where applicable, or seek a refund subject to the applicable rules and the airline's terms of carriage.
At the time of filing the report, several affected passengers were reportedly still at the Lagos airport terminal, while others had returned to their hotels as they awaited further instructions from the airline.
Delta Responds
Reacting to the disruption, Delta’s Station Manager for Nigeria, Salami Omeiza, said the airline was working to resolve the situation and assist affected customers as quickly as possible.
“Delta regrets the inconvenience this disruption has caused and appreciates the patience and understanding of our customers. The safety and well-being of our customers and crew remain our highest priority,” Omeiza said.
He explained that the disruption involved operational and maintenance issues, stressing that the airline's teams were working to address the situation and make alternative travel arrangements for passengers.
The Delta official further clarified the circumstances surrounding the affected services.
“Delta flight DL55 on August 23 was cancelled due to operational reasons, while the flight on August 25 departed behind schedule as technicians resolved a maintenance issue with the aircraft. Our teams are working urgently to assist affected customers and re-accommodate them on the next available flights,” he said.
Omeiza added: “We are providing affected customers with the necessary support and will share further updates as they become available.”
The repeated disruption has nevertheless left affected passengers facing uncertainty, additional travel expenses and missed connections, as they await alternative arrangements to complete their journeys from Lagos to the United States.
