SEASON OF THE WITCH - Review

Season of the Witch was kind of cheesy. It wasn’t the worst movie I’ve ever seen, and as the year is brand new, I’m pretty sure I’ll see much worse. There were good moments, and comedic moments, but I’m pretty sure I wasn’t supposed to bust out laughing in the middle of battles to keep the people and the world safe. While the concept makes some kind of sense–that in the Middle Ages the plague was caused by witchcraft–it leads to awkward and weird battles. The beginning of the movie was a little hard to take, but once we got into the main story of trying to escort the witch to the monks, the story picked up, and it stayed fun through the rest of the movie.

My favorite part in the movie had to do with the priest trying to perform an exorcism. In the middle of the incantation, a demon tries to attack him. The priest bitch slaps him with the book that he’s reading the passage from, then goes back to performing the ceremony. It is equal parts awesome and hilarious. I couldn’t stop laughing, but at the same time thought it was pretty hard core to try to hold off a demon with a book.
Ron Perlman is one of the only reasons to watch Season of the Witch. He plays Felson, who, along with Behman, is one of the best soldiers in the Crusades. Felson and Behman are the best of friends and do everything together, including deserting the army, but Felson is quick to stand up to Behman when he feels that he has to. Perlman is both hilarious and kick-ass throughout the film. His performance is what got me through the beginning of the movie.
Nicolas Cage wasn’t horrible in this movie, but in all fairness, he’s not my favorite actor. He plays Behman, who’s headstrong and seemingly acts before he thinks. He has good chemistry with Ron Perlman, but other than that, there’s just nothing outstanding about his performance. It didn’t suck, either, though.

Stephen Campbell Moore was the priest that accompanied Felson and Behman on the trip to deliver the witch to the monks. I liked his performance. There were times when you were supposed to be suspicious of him, and he pulled that off well. Then there were times in battle where he’d get the cheesiest action lines or do something that was simultaneously awesome and funny, and that was enjoyable, too.
Claire Foy played the girl who was suspected of being the witch that brought the black plague on people. She actually did a good job of playing innocent and creepy evil at the same time. Throughout the movie, you didn’t know whether or not she was really a witch, and by the time you think you have it figured out, they switch it up on you. Foy could pull off good and evil in the same breath, which I can’t imagine being easy for anyone, and I was impressed by her performance.
Overall, I would wait to rent Season of the Witch. It wasn’t horrible, but it’s not the most epic movie, either. It had its moments, but it’s more of a cheestastic movie that’s fun to laugh at. It’s an enjoyable movie, but not one that’s worth the rush out to the theater over.
