But first, there were a few announcements: Jennifer Lopez is on the new cover of Vogue, and fashion designer Tommy Hilfiger will join the cast next week as American Idol's new "image adviser," helping the contestants "look the part from head to toe." The contestants also visited a haunted house for "Ghost Town," the new Ford video. Then it was time for your voting results.
Ryan called Phillip Phillips, Skylar Laine, Elise Testone, and Joshua Ledet to center stage. On Wednesday, Phillip sang "Hard to Handle" after having surgery for kidney stones, and Randy thought he sounded "amazing." So did resident mentor Jimmy Iovine. "He went far beyond the call of duty," Jimmy said. "I'm really proud of him."
Skylar sang Bonnie Raitt's "Love Sneakin' Up on You," and Jennifer thought she "killed" it. Jimmy was mixed. "I have a lot of faith in Skylar," he said. "I think she's better than she was last night. The song was not exactly right for her. It didn't have a big enough melody."
Elise, who was "saved" by the judges last week, performed Tina Turner's version of "Let's Stay Together," and Jennifer called it "a beautiful, beautiful thing." Jimmy loved it, too. "Elise blew my mind last night . . . she stays," he predicted.
Joshua sang Michael Bolton's version of "When a Man Loves a Woman," and Jennifer called it, "the best thing I've ever seen on American Idol." In fact, Percy Sledge, who recorded the original 1966 version of the song, even emailed to say: "Joshua did a wonderful job, he scored a 10 in my book. I loved his interpretation — I'm very proud of him." Jimmy added, "You don't sing that song much better than that. Last week Jessica had a big moment. This week it was Joshua's turn."
Ryan dimmed the lights . . . After nationwide vote, Joshua, Phillip, and Skylar were safe. Despite her impressive performance, Elise was in the bottom three.
The contestants took a break while Demi Lovato performed her latest single, "Give Your Heart a Break," and then Ryan called Colton Dixon, Shannon Magrane, DeAndre Brackensick, and Jessica Sanchez to center stage.
As for DeAndre, Jennifer thought Jimmy steered him wrong with his song choice, "Endless Love." Randy agreed, calling it "boring." But Jimmy defended himself. "The judges thought it was wrong song," he said. "Maybe it was. Ultimately it's [the singer's] choice. He did a very good job in rehearsal, but he did not deliver it on the show."
Colton sang the little-known song "Broken Heart" by White Lion, and Jennifer said he "looks pretty" when he sings. Steven told Colton it was "the wrong song for your voice and your passion . . . raspberries." Randy said the song "didn't matter," because he "performed it dope." Jimmy agreed with Steven, but said Randy "completely confused" him. "The song doesn't matter, the song does matter . . . which one is it?"
Jennifer and Randy were "terrified" for Shannon, who sang "One Sweet Day," but the judges agreed she did a "beautiful" job. Jimmy was less impressed. "Shannon is at her best when she doesn't push too hard," he said. "Unfortunately, I think she pushed too hard last night."
Jessica sang "Turn the Beat Around," and Jennifer thought it "lagged a little bit behind." Steven thought the rhythm was "a little shady," and Jimmy agreed. "Jessica wanted to do an up tempo song," he said. "I completely supported her in that. She does not want to be an opera singer in a talent show. She lost her rhythm when she lost her breath, but if she goes home, we should all go home."

The contestants took a break to enjoy Daughtry's new single, "Outta My Head," and then Ryan called Erika Van Pelt, Heejun Han, and Hollie Cavanagh to center stage. Hollie sang Celine Dion's "Power of Love," and Steven said her voice was from "heaven above." Randy said that she "blew it out of the box" and had "another moment." Jimmy gave Hollie "straight As" for her performance, saying, "She was fantastic. The only thing that was flawed was how she was dressed: They dressed her so old."
Heejun sang Richard Marx's "Right Here Waiting," and Randy said that he "didn't enjoy it at all." Jimmy warned Heejun that he needs to spice it up or "people are gonna get bored."
Erika performed Bryan Adams' "Heaven," and Steven thought it was "too busy all over it." Randy also criticized the "jerky arrangement." Jimmy defended the arrangement (which was his idea), but added, "There's a trap on American Idol called over-singing, and Erika fell into it last night."
After the nationwide vote, Hollie and Heejun are going on tour, while Erika placed in the bottom three, along with Elise, and Shannon. The judges didn't think that Elise deserved to be there, however, so she was quickly sent to safety, leaving Shannon and Erika in the bottom two. Then Erika was also sent to safety, meaning that Shannon had to "sing for her life," reprising her performance of "One Sweet Day."
The judges decided not to use their only save of the season on Shannon. She handled it well, telling her fans, "Thank you guys so much for being so loyal to me and so honest with me. It feels so good standing on this stage."
