Lagos State House of Assembly
Committee on Transportation has urged members of the National Union of Roads
Transport Workers (NURTW), Owutu in Ikorodu West Local Council Development Area
(LCDA) to remain calm and not put laws into their hands over the demolition of
their park in the area.
The union had written a petition
to the House Committee to register their displeasure over the alleged
demolition of the said park by the state government, describing the act as
barbaric.
NURTW members also claimed that
the state government approved the use of the land for them in 2006, to
construct and operate as a modern park and garage. “After realizing the
position of the land, we entered into an agreement with a building developer in
order to achieve our objective in making the parcel of land an ultra-modern
motor park and garage.
“Suddenly, the Ministry of
Physical Planning sealed up the offices and shops on the land, on the ground of
building plan approval and requested our developer to submit his building plan
for necessary approval and to pay penalty for late submission.
“It was a sad day for the entire
members of the NURTW to wake up on the Tuesday February 28, 2012 to realise
that all the structures, including 400 key clams have been suddenly
demolished,” the petition read.
However, the committee on getting
to the park last week Tuesday, sympathized with members of the union, and
promising to look into the matter and addressing it to a logical conclusion.
The Chairman of the Committee,
Bisi Yusuf while addressing the union members and other stakeholders urged them
to remain calm and not take laws into their hands.
According to Yusuf “from what we
learnt, the former park used to be a death trap and that was why this place was
approved for a park. We have come here and we have seen things ourselves; we
would go back to the House and do the necessary things by inviting necessary
stakeholders in order to find a lasting solution.
“You must be careful and not put
laws into your own hands. We all know the security situation in the country and
we don't the boko haram people to capitalise on any breakdown of peace in Lagos and find their ways
into the state. We are concerned about security of lives and property,” Yusuf added.
