Pope Benedict XVI has
denounced gay marriage describing it as an anomaly which seeks to alter divine
order.
The head of the Catholic
Church in a speech to United States bishops visiting Vatican City, warned of
"powerful political and cultural currents seeking to alter the legal
definition of marriage".
He also urged the bishops to
emphasize to their Church that premarital sex and cohabitation was
"gravely sinful" and "damaging to the stability of
society".
The Pope's comments came
shortly after the U.S states of Washington and Maryland legalised same-sex
marriage.
But at least five U.S states
have scheduled ballot measures that could overturn the gay marriage laws.
"Sexual differences
cannot be dismissed as irrelevant to the definition of marriage," BBC
quoted the Pope as saying to the bishops.
He acknowledged during the
speech that his point of view may sound "countercultural", especially
to young people.
But the Pope stressed that
the bishops should do what they could to ensure traditional marriage would be
"defended from every possible misrepresentation of their true
nature".
