Former governor of Delta state James Ibori has been sentenced by Southwark Court to 13 years behind bars for fraud and money laundering. Earlier in the trial, Ibori stood shame-faced in the dock of London’s Southwark Court as he admitted stealing tens of millions of pounds from the oil-rich Delta state.
Ibori admitted one count of conspiracy to launder money, five count of money laundering and one count of obtaining a property transfer by deception over the theft of more than £25m while he was governor.
He also pleaded guilty to conspiracy to defraud, conspiracy to make false instruments, and one count of money laundering linked to a $37m (£23.3m) share fraud of the sale of shares in V mobile.
Ibori was extradited from Dubai to the UK in April 2011 and Detective Inspector Paul Whatmore said Ibori’s loot stood around $250 million
