Former Managing Director of the
defunct Oceanic Bank, who had been in and out of jail over corrupt practices,
Chief (Mrs.) Cecilia Ibru recently got the disgrace of her life, when she was
refused entry visa into the United
States of America .
Cecilia, who used to travel all
over the world in her heyday, had gone to the US Embassy in Abuja in company of
her aides on April 16, 2012 to renew her entry visa to the God's own country
and had expected a smooth ride as she is a notable figure, whose name rings
more than a bell.
Sources revealed that officials
of the embassy critically looked at her papers and since she is an ex-convict,
it was not possible for her visa application to be approved, and the
application was instantly turned down.
It will be recalled that some
choice properties of Cecilia Ibru were seized by the Economic and Financial
Crimes Commission (EFCC) after she was found guilty of stealing and diversion
of billions of naira as the then Managing Director of Oceanic Bank and subsequently jailed for a
paltry six months after a plea bargaining.
The once highly celebrated top banker,
investigation revealed, had planned to travel to the country for some important
matters and she had made all necessary preparations for the now botched trip.
Eye witnesses' accounts maintained that Cecilia was shell-shocked, when she was
informed that her visa application had been refused.
With this, the American
government may have sent signals to corrupt public and private officials that
they would no longer be given an easy entry into the country.
“We were all surprised over the
development. This is a woman, who has traveled all over the world, including
the US
on several occasions. We thought the whole matter had been forgotten since she
has served her prison terms. We never knew she would be taken up over her past
deeds. It was a bitter pill for her to swallow. We pray this will come to an
end one day,” said a source.
Investigations by First Weekly
revealed that Cecilia had an appointment with her doctors in the United States ,
which was why she went to the embassy to renew the visa, but she may have to
look for an alternative now.
