Boko Haram Committee, Yoruba Leaders Meet

The Presidential Committee on Dialogue and Conflict Resolution in the North  on Friday met Yoruba leaders under the aegis of Yoruba Unity Forum (YUF), just as the SouthWest zone called for a national conference to end insecurity in the country.Speaking to journalists after a closed-door meeting, Minister for Special Duties and Chairman of the Committee, Mr. Kabir Taminu Turaki (SAN) said the meeting was part of efforts at finding solution to insecurity in the country. He said the meeting was to rub minds with Yoruba  leaders on the issue, assuring that their input would form part of their recommendations.

Specifically, he said the Federal Government was serious about ending the Boko Haram menace within the shortest time possible. Turaki disclosed that the committee’s greatest challenge in the course of the assignment was locating the insurgents.

According to him, this was in view of the fact that members of the dreaded group feared they might be arrested.

He, however, said they have been able to record  tremendous achievements that would help the government in tacking insurgency.

Continuing, he assured that the government would compensate the victims for  losses incurred. On his part, the Publicity secretary of YUF, Dr Kunle Olajide said Yorubas want a national conference to address some of the challenges facing the country.

He hinged this on the fact that Nigerians should be able to discuss the way and manner they want to live together. He added that the Federal Government must compensate victims of the Boko Haram menace.

Olajide added criminals also needed to be dealt with, so that an end could be put to insurgency across the country, just as he called for speedy implementation of the committee’s report .

YUF Deputy leader, Bishop Bolanle Gbonigi, who lauded President  Goodluck Jonathan for his peace initiatives, corroborated his views.

Prominent Yoruba leaders at the meeting included, Femi Okuronmu, Kofo Bucknor-Akerele among others.
