News had got to town few months back
that the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) under the leadership of Pastor
Enoch Adeboye was planning to expand its expansive camp ground located at
Kilometre 46, Lagos-Ibadan Expressway and that the project would cost billions
of naira.
This did not go without criticism from many quarters and from those, who felt the camp ground was big enough and that the money meant for such an expansion should have been used to cater for the masses and even repair bad roads in some parts of the country. They said that the project was an extravagant venture that should not come at this austere time in the country.
The critics then called on the
General Overseer of the Mission, Pastor Adeboye to reconsider the plan and
reach out to the suffering members of the congregation ‘rather expanding an
already big auditorium.’
Responding to the torrents of
criticism recently, Pastor Adeboye reportedly told his audience that the
critics of the project did not understand the concept of church.
Our informants said that Pastor
Adeboye stressed that the number one purpose of establishing a church is to win
souls for Christ and that he would not compromise on his evangelism drive that
has been yielding results over the years.
According to a source, “Adeboye
maintained that the church was established for evangelism purposes and not for
road construction. He told us that it is the responsibility of the government
to build roads and provide jobs for the people. He said he would not stop
making provisions to accommodate more people at the camp ground as he said the
work of God must continue.”
The widely traveled cleric reportedly
said that the church is actually not insensitive to the plight of the
downtrodden or the people, which is why, according to him, the church has
Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programmes all over the country and
provides supports for people in different areas.
However, Daddy G.O, as Pastor Adeboye
is called, reportedly insisted that the expansion project would continue and
that RCCG would not stop establishing parishes since one of two of the missions
of the church are to have at least a member of every family in the world as a
member and also take as many people as possible to heaven.
