We’ll Visit KAI Illegal Detention Centre Soon – NHRC

The National Human Rights Commission has said it will visit an illegal detention centre being operated by Kick Against Indiscipline, the enforcement unit of the Lagos State Ministry of Environment. The NHRC stated this after its South-West public hearing on illegal demolitions and evictions on Friday.
It  was  learnt that some Non-Governmental Organisations, representing some individuals and communities, wrote petitions against Ogun and Lagos states’ governments.
Executive Secretary and Chairman of the commission, Prof. Ben Angwe, said the commission received 11 petitions before the beginning of the hearing and seven during the hearing.

He said, “We received seven more petitions during the hearing. We completed hearing on two petitions brought against the Ogun State government. We have finished about 50 per cent of other cases. Every story had more than one side.
“When we read a petition, we found the story very interesting, but during hearing, we discovered others issues. That is why we adjourned other cases till the New Year for some facts finding.

“We are moving to access some of the disputed areas in Makoko waterfront, Otumara and an illegal detention centre operated by Lagos State Kick Against Indiscipline at Alausa.”
Thousands of Makoko waterfront residents, trooped out to receive the commission members, pleading with them to save their ancestral homes.

Mr. Olarewaju Akinsola, Senior Special Assistant to Lagos State Governor Babatunde Fashola, said the government would abide by the decision of the commission after the inquiry.
“The state government is satisfied with the proceedings. The government believes in the rule of law, which is the reason the state was represented at the hearing.

“We know  that the commission is serious with its business, and this is a new development in Nigeria. Whatever is the decision of the commission, we will abide by it.
“We have stated our own side of the case, we leave the judgement for the commission,’’ Akinsola said.
