Veteran journalist and vice chairman
of the Sun Newspapers, Dimgba Igwe has died. He died today from injuries he
sustained in an accident.
The associate publisher of
Entertainment weekly magazine was knocked down this morning by a car while
jogging near his home in the Okota area of Lagos. He was rushed to the hospital
where he later died. He was just 58 years old.
Facts have emerged over the sudden death of veteran
journalist and Associate Publisher of Entertainment Express Newspaper, Pastor
Dimgba Igwe.
Igwe, who doubled as Vice
Chairman of The Sun Newspaper, passed on after he was knocked down by a hit and
run driver while jogging along Okota area of Lagos.
However, findings by our correspondent indicate that
the late celebrated journalist would have survived the accident that claimed
his life if prompt medical attention had reached him.
A family source told this newspaper that when Dimgba
was hit by the vehicle, his wife was taking one of their sons to school when
she heard the sad news.
“Immediately the call came in, madam was like, ‘who
know me this kain early morning’. But when she picked, she heard the husband’s
voice who asked her to turn back.
“When we got to the accident seen, we saw him sitting
down with blood gushing out and we had to rush him to a nearby hospital along
Ago Palace way”, he said.
He further hinted us that when the staff of the
hospital sensed that they could not cope with degrees of injuries sustained by
the respected analyst-cum-cleric, they had to transfer him to Isolo General
Hospital.
“But sad enough, there was no surgeon around at the
time he was taken there, so they had to move him to Lagos University Teaching Hospital,
LASUTH.
“We had to chatter ambulance, which took us to LASUTH,
where he eventually lost battle to the pains.
“In fact, when we were going to the hospital, he was
saying Amen to the prayers and saying ‘I will not die.’ But when the pain and
blood gushing out become unbearable at LASUTH, he passed on”, the emotion-laden
family member said
When pressmen visited the family house located on
Dele Orishabiyi Street in Okota, Lagos, many of his colleagues, church members
and protégés were seen penning down their condolence messages in the register
opened for the deceased.
Meanwhile, Dimgba’s ‘twin brother’ Mike Awoyinfa is
not yet back from the UK where he went with his family.
It was also gathered that both Mike and Dimgba have
set of twins, males and females
