A Lagos lawmaker, Hon. Desmond Elliot has said that he is concerned about the well being of the people of Surulere Constituency 1, who he is representing at the Lagos State House of Assembly.
Addressing newsmen during a programme tagged; 'Surulere Women Walk,' where several women walked round the area and went through medical check-up on Saturday October 24, 2015 at Teslim Balogun Staidum, Elliot, said that he was motivated to organise the programme based on his experience a couple of months back.
"I was very ill and going by doctor's advice, one has to take health seriously, it is almost a year now. I have taken it in my stride to let my people in Surulere take their health seriously, may be they are 50 or 60 years old, they need to take care of their health, and that is what we are doing now.
"It wouldn't cost you anything, all you need do is take a walk, get yourself checked, which is what we are doing now. We are trying to walk, check our vitals, check for diabetes, hypertension, eye, nose, throat and you could get glasses free of charge. We want to get a healthy Surulere, this is the hub of sports in Nigeria. This is the only area that has two stadia, we have the National Stadium and the state stadium, Teslim Balogun Staidum here," he said.
The popular Nollywood actor added after a walk round Surulere area with the women that his wife is the main motivator of the programme, saying that it is good to marry a good person.
According to him, anytime he wanted to do anything, his wife would ask him to start with women first, who he said are our mothers.
"As we are doing this, I am doing a skill acquisition and empowerment programme for the physically challenged. That is going on now and it would end next month. Once a woman is industrious, it moves in geometric progression as against other genders. I am not saying the male gender actually, but other genders grow arithmetically unlike the women. A woman would speak with her husband, children and others. Next month, we are doing for the males. It would be a run and it would be inter-local governments," he stated.
The lawmaker confirmed that there is a large population of women in Surulere, and that by the time one talks to one woman, he has spoken to 10 men because she would talk to her husband, sons and so many people, saying that women help one to cut down cost.
Speaking at the event, a physically challenged beneficiary, Hannah Ogie thanked Hon. Elliot for identifying with people like her as she said that some people don't like associating with them.
She stated that there are many physically challenged people In Surulere, and that Elliot has been taking them along.
"He is empowering us now through skill acquisition so that he would teach us how to fish rather than giving us fish. Some of our people are not here because they want to travel.
"We have different challenges, some drivers do not like to pick us, I had to come here with a cab. We don't like begging, I am a short put sports person, but I don't have sponsors. I thank Elliot for his support for us and for the people of Surulere," she said.
