Amosun Names School, Estate After HID

Governor Ibikunle Amosun of Ogun State on Monday named the only Model School in Ikenne and the recently-completed PlainField Estate at Oke-Mosan in Abeokuta after the late Chief Hannah Idowu Dideolu Awolowo.
Amosun made the announcement in his address at Sagamu International Stadium, where he hosted eminent personalities as part of activities organised for the burial of the late HID.

The governor, who eulogised the deceased, described her as “a pride of womanhood,” promised that his administration would uphold the legacies of the Awolowo dynasty.
Amosun, in his keynote address at the programme tagged, “Ogun Celebrates HID Awolowo,” added that naming the two projects after the late matriarch was part of moves to immortalise the deceased.

He said, “The two projects named after her will preserve the memories of the late matriarch of the Awolowo family.

“The state executive council met today (Monday) and we agreed to name some projects after Mama; the ones that will be lasting.”

The governor described the late HID Awolowo as a rare gem who played a vital role in the stability of the Awolowo family and Yorubaland.
Also, the former sole administrator of Ekiti State, Gen. Adetunji Olurin (retd.), noted that the free education policy initiated by the late sage, Chief Obafemi Awolowo in 1955, enabled children of poor Nigerians to have access to basic education.

He described the late HID as “a strong housewife and a diligent supporter of her husband. Our Mama was a very strong-hearted woman; very dedicated to the society and her community.”
Also, former Interim National Government; Chief Ernest Sonekan, while quoting Proverbs Chapter 12 verse 4 of the Holy Bible, described the late HID as a virtuous woman who was a crown to her husband.

He said, “She was a great pillar of support to her husband, especially during his political travails.”

In her response, the eldest daughter of the late matriarch, Mrs. Omotola Oyediran, commended the state government for honouring their late mother and she thanked Nigerians for attending the programme.

She said, “I don’t know what to say because really; this is awesome. This is exactly what Mama wanted. You have all demonstrated to us that you appreciate what Mama and Papa meant to Nigeria. We’ll not disappoint Nigeria.”

Eminent personalities who attended the event included Minister of Solid Minerals, Dr. Kayode Fayemi; the wife of the Vice-President, Dolapo Osinbajo, one of the national leaders of the All Progressives Congress, Chief Bisi Akande; wife of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, Bola: and a chieftain of Afenifere, Chief Ayo Adebanjo.

Meanwhile, the Ogun State Government has directed that all markets and public schools in the Remo Zone of the state be closed on Wednesday for the burial of the late HID.

This is contained in a release signed in Abeokuta on Monday by the Secretary to the State Government, Mr. Taiwo Adeoluwa.

It stated that the closure was a mark of respect for the late matriarch of the Awolowo dynasty, who died on September 19.

The release, however, said the directive would affect only schools in Ikenne, Remo North and Sagamu Local Government Areas of the state.

“Government, hereby, appeals to market men and women as well as residents of the state to troop out en-masse to give the late Mrs. Awolowo a befitting burial,’’ it said.

The final burial of Mrs. Awolowo would hold in Ikenne on Wednesday (tomorrow).
