TREND UPDATE: Facebook Link Preview Changes

Facebook deprecated the ability for users to customise link appearances via Graph API. This means that no third party tool, such as Digitalprwire, can offer this option anymore. How should you react and what can you expect next? Read on to find out.

    What has changed?
As part of Facebook's continuing efforts to stop the spread of misinformation and false news on their platform, they have removed the ability to customize link metadata (i.e. headline, description, image) from all link sharing entry points on Facebook.

    What is the impact?
Any customized metadata added to link attachments after July 18, 2017 will be ignored by Facebook. If you have pre-scheduled posts prior to July 18 with modified links, all your modifications will be lost and Facebook will publish the original metadata from the pulled URL.

Link modification will be deprecated for all "dark posts" - also known as unpublished Page posts - on July 26, 2017.

Facebook has extended the deprecation timeline for large media publishers to allow time to indicate link ownership. On September 12, 2017, Facebook will complete the feature removal such that large media publishers' Page(s) will only be allowed to edit links from website domains they have authorized with the link ownership tool.
Even in the case of large media publishers, Facebook will not support link modification through Graph API.

    What to expect next?
Large media publishers can indicate link ownership for their Pages and domains to ensure continued link modification capabilities in Facebook’s native publishing tools. If you are eligible for the Link Ownership tool, you can find it on a tab in your Page's Publishing Tools.
