Netflix has found a great deal of success with their original television series, from original dramas House of Cards and Sense8 to their Marvel Comics adaptations including Daredeviland Luke Cage. Their original series span a wide variety of genres - so much so that there's essentially something for everyone. Now, Netflix is getting set to debut a new book adaptation, with their upcoming series based on The Witchernovels.
It was first announced in May 2017 that Netflix was developing a Witcher TV show, with Lauren Schmidt Hissrich (Daredevil, The Defenders) later joining as showrunner to shepherd the adaptation to streaming screens. Hissrich has been open about the Witcher TV show on social media, promising it won't water down the contentand offering regular updates on the process of development. Now, The Witcher takes a major step forward by casting the TV show's lead character.
Known for his starring role in Man of Steel and reloading his fists in Mission Impossible: Fallout, the actor recently showed interest in playing the fantasy hero, and it didn’t take Netflix long to take notice.
The eight-episode series will focus on the popular game franchise and series of novels by Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski.
It is unclear which of the novels or games it will draw inspiration from, or if Netflix has plans to tackle a specific entry of the series. Who knows, it may even conjure up something original.
Lauren Schmidt Hissrich, showrunner for Daredevil and The Defenders, will be taking the helm on the project, although a release date is yet to be confirmed by Netflix.
The RPG series is critically acclaimed thanks to its excellent storytelling, huge world, and deep combat. Its third entry, Wild Hunt, walked away with our Game of the Year award in 2015.
We are hoping that the upcoming television series can deliver a similar level of quality, as it has plenty of fan expectations to live up to.
