4Active: Toyota Trademarks Signal New Crossover

Looking through the Toyota range of crossovers and SUVs, there's a gulf in off-road performance levels between the mid-size Toyota Highlander crossover and the mid-size truck-chassis based 4Runner SUV. A comfortable crossover but with rugged off-road chops to suit a more adventurous lifestyle. That's why we're interested to learn that Toyota has completed its trademark of the name 4Active with the United States Patent and Trademark Office.

Toyota has previously announced it was working on a new crossover and the 4Active seems like an appropriate name.
Despite its age, we reached the conclusion that the 4Runner is our Off-Road Warrior Of The Year for 2019. However, while it'll tear up an off-road trail, the 4Runner isn't as refined on the road.

We also recently reviewed the 2020 Toyota Highlander and were mostly impressed with it, particularly the interior and technology. What we want to see is something that bridges the gap between the two, and it's something Toyota showed us in the form of the Toyota FT-4X Concept back in 2017.

Toyota envisioned its boxy and small off-road crossover using a small-displacement four-cylinder engine while also offering a four-wheel-drive system with a selectable low-range. Unlike the 4Runner or the earlier FJ Cruiser, the FT-4X was built on the Toyota New Global Architecture-C unibody platform. If Toyota stuck to the size, it wouldn't compete directly with the larger mid-sized Honda Passport. Instead, it would sit somewhere in size between Toyota's C-HR and RAV4 models.

Of course, the 4Active name could be used for something else, such as an all-wheel-drive system rather than a new model, which would be just as exciting. That could signal we're finally getting a proper revamp of the 4Runner and Sequoia, and possibly a system for the next generation of trucks.
