MediaTek Announces Dimensity 800 Chipset for Mid-range Smartphones

The MediaTek Dimensity 800 SoC will officially be launched in Q1 2020, and will soon after start finding a place in smartphones.

At its Product Communication Conference, MediaTek has announced an all new chipset the MediaTek Dimensity 800. The chipset has been launched as the company’s latest solution for mid-range and upper mid-range smartphones.

As per reports, the MediaTek Dimensity 800 SoC will officially be launched in Q1 2020, and will soon after start finding a place in smartphones starting from the second quarter of the year. While the company has unveiled the SoC, details about the transistor size, clock speed and other architecture has still not been revealed.

However, the expectation is that this information will be shared once the company is ready to launch the chipset in a couple of months. The new chipset has been announced a week after MediaTek unveiling of the Dimensity 1000 5G chipset. Interestingly, this is the company return to the high-end segment where it will have to take on the likes of Samsung’s Exynos 9810 Snapdragon 855 and Huawei’s Kirin 990 SoC.

The Dimensity 1000 5G features four high-end Cortex-A77 based BIG cores clocked at 2.6GHz and four Cortex-A55 power-efficient cores clocked at 2.2GHz. It comes with a dual cluster arrangement instead of the tri-cluster arrangements that we’ve been seeing on high-end processors like Kirin 990, Snapdragon 855 and even Exynos 990.

For graphics, the new MediaTek chip comes with the new Mali-G77 MP9 GPU, and comes integrated with the Helio M70 5G modem that saves space and is efficient at the same time and is the world’s fastest throughput SoC with 4.7Gbps downlink and 2.5Gbps uplink speeds and supports both standalone and non-standalone networks (Sa/NSA).

User’s looking to get their hands on this chipset won’t have to wait for too long as the upcoming Oppo Reno 3 smartphone has been confirmed to come powered by MediaTek Dimensity 1000L 5G processor. The benchmark result showed the processor has a Mali-G77 GPU. We presume it also has Cortex-A77 CPU cores like the Dimensity 1000 but at a lower clock speed.
