TCL's New 8K TV Brings the IMAX Experience Home

TCL's new 8K QLED TV delivers an IMAX Enhanced-certified movie theater to your living room so you never have to leave the house to catch a blockbuster again.

The 'IMAX Enhanced' program for TVs, audio systems and content was launched in 2018. It is not a format but rather a performance standard based on some loosely defined specifications. The stamp of approval will let a TV pull down IMAX Enhanced content from participating streaming services.

TCL has announced that its new 8K "QLED" LCD TV (model X915) has received IMAX Enhanced certification. Besides an LCD panel with zone dimming LED, X915 features Android TV, HDMI 2.1, support for HDR10+ and Dolby Vision, and a built-in soundbar with Dolby Atmos support.

Ironically, the TV does not support DTS:X, which is part of the IMAX Enhanced program.

"It is our absolute pleasure to gain recognition and partner with such an elite program as IMAX Enhanced. TCL Android QLED TVs have met the highest level of standards, and ensure the best color, contrast, clarity and sound on the market," said Kevin Wang, CEO of TCL Electronics.

Sony's high-end OLED and LCD TVs were the first to receive the certification in 2018, making Sony and TCL the only two TV makers to be on board with the initiative.

The companies did not detail how to get IMAX content onto the TCL TV. IMAX Enhanced was officially introduced in parts of Europe in September 2019 via a partnership with movie service Rakuten so it likely that the TCL TV will gain access to the same library of IMAX content on Rakuten.

TCL X915 is available in 75 inches for 4000 Euro in parts of Europe.
