    COVID-19: 499 New Cases Recorded, 5 More Fatalities in Nigeria

    According to the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), 499 new COVID-19 cases and 5 fatalities were recorded in the country over the past 24 hours.

    The new coronavirus update in Nigeria have raised the nationwide tally to 30748, the health angency announced on Thursday.

    However, 173 patients were discharged after testing negative to the virus, bringing total number of people recovered and discharged to 12,546

    The health agency also said that the new cases were reported in 23 states and Federal Capital Territory.

    According to the data released by NCDC, Lagos led with 157 cases of the virus infections, while Edo came second with 59 cases, and Ondo state in the third position with 56 cases.

    Other state with new cases of the virus infections: Oyo-31, Akwa Ibom-22, Borno-21, Plateau-19, Kaduna and Katsina had 18 cases each, Bayelsa-17, FCT-17, Delta-14, Kano-11, Rivers-10, Enugu-8, Ogun-6, Kwara-4, Imo-3, Nasarawa and Osun had 2 cases each, while Abia, Ekiti, Niger and Yobe reported 1 case each.

    Nigeria has tested 171,931 persons since the first confirmed case relating to the COVID-19 pandemic was announced on 27 February 2020.

    On the 9th of July 2020, 499 new confirmed cases and 5 deaths were recorded in Nigeria

    No new state has reported a case in the last 24 hours

    Till date, 30748 cases have been confirmed, 12546 cases have been discharged and 689 deaths have been recorded in 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.

    As part of efforts to curb the virus’s spread, Nigeria has introduced several measures at airports across the country.

    Nigeria has the third highest number of cases in Africa, after Egypt and South Africa.

    The number of coronavirus cases in Africa has exceeded 522,643, while the death toll on the continent surpassed 12,000 with over 252,944 recoveries.

    The coronavirus pandemic has claimed over 551,522 lives in 188 countries and regions since originating in Wuhan, China last December.

    Over 12,128,406 million cases have been reported worldwide, with more than 6.6 million recoveries, according to figures compiled by US-based Johns Hopkins University.
