    Nigeria Records 653 New COVID-19 Cases as Total Inflections Surpass 36,000

    As the West African nation struggles to get to grips with rising numbers of new infections, Nigeria on Saturday night recorded 653 new cases of coronavirus infections, as total inflections in the country surpass 36,000.

    The new cases confirmed by the health agency took the country’s tally of COVID-19 cases to 36,107 across 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

    NCDC also disclosed that six more deaths were reported taking the total death toll to 778. About 305 of the infected people have recovered and have been discharged after treatment from various isolation centre.

    There has been an increase in infections since Nigeria eased its total lockdown in early May.
    The health agency’s data shows that the new cases were spread across 27 states and the Federal Capital Territory.

    A breakdown of the news cases shows that Lagos recorded 115 positive cases, 85 cases were found in Kwara, 80 in Enugu and 78 cases in FTC.

    River state reported 36 cases of the virus, Ondo had 35 cases, Oyo reported 30 cases, Katsina had 28 cases. While Kaduna and Abia reported 19 cases each, Nasarawa had 18 cases,  Plateau confirmed 17 cases and Imo reported 16 cases.

    Also Ogun, Ebonyi, Benue and Kano reported nine cases each, Delta had eight cases, Bauchi had seven cases, Ekiti confirmed six cases. 

    Gombe, Bayelsa, Adamawa and Osun reported four cases each, while Cross River, Yobe, Borno and Zamfara confirmed one case each.

    The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control has conducted about 209,446 tests since the first confirmed case relating to the COVID-19 pandemic was announced.

    On the 18th of July 2020, 653 new confirmed cases and 6 deaths were recorded in Nigeria.
    Till date, 36,107 cases have been confirmed, 14,938 cases have been discharged and 778 deaths have been recorded in 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.
