Anthony Joshua admits he is ‘coming towards end of career’, reveals how many years left before retirement as Tyson Fury fight looms.
Anthony Joshua has declared that he is coming towards the end of his boxing career.
The unified heavyweight champion started off in the sport
back in 2008.
His four-year amateur career saw him win a 2011 World
Championship silver medal and then the crowning glory – 2012 Olympic gold.
AJ turned professional the following year and raced to win
the IBF heavyweight world title by 2016.
He added the WBA crown to his collection in 2017 and then
picked up the WBO in 2018.
2019 saw his first defeat – to Andy Ruiz Jr – though he
avenged this in an immediate rematch and still stands as three-belt champion
today.
His plan for 2021 is to finally win that elusive fourth and
final major title from WBC champion Tyson Fury.
Regardless of whether he achieves this or not, Joshua knows
he can’t fight on forever.
He told Sky: “This isn’t the start of my career. I’m coming
towards the end of my career.
“I’m not someone who lives in the moment and thinks that
everything is just for now.
“I’m always planning ahead so I’m coming towards the end of
my career.
“Five years left and that’s basically an Olympic cycle. I’ve
got an Olympic cycle and a little bit more left.
“So when you see the next Olympics happen is when I’ll be
coming to the end of my career and the next generation will be coming through.”
AJ previously said of his rival’s career: “Fury has been
professional much longer than me. He should be looking to retire soon.
“If he wants to cement his legacy, I’m here and ready.”
