    Nigeria Records 576 New COVID-19 Infections, 8 Deaths

    Since Nigeria's first case of the new coronavirus was reported on Feb. 27 in Lagos state, more than 952,900 people have been diagnosed. While encouraging news has emerged on the vaccine front with positive data on Pfizer Inc.’s candidate, it is likely to be some time before most Nigerias have access, though the nation expects to obtain its first shipment of a COVID-19 vaccine this month.

    Nigerian on Saturday confirmed 8 additional COVID-19-related death and 576 new infections in the country.

    According to a latest update by Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, the total number of cases in the country rose to 89,163 and deaths toll from the virus reached 1,302.

    NCDC also announced the discharge of 416 patients from isolation centers across the country, taking the total number of recoveries to 74,789.

    With over 31,107 infections and 247 deaths recorded, commercial capital Lagos remains Nigeria’s worst-hit city. The most populous city in Nigeria and the African continent reported the highest daily figure of infections on Saturday, followed by FCT and Oyo with 277, 90 and 51 cases respectively.

    Other states with new virus infections as follows: Nasarawa-49, Sokoto-23, Anambra-14, Bauchi-11, Imo-11, Kano-11, Edo-10, Plateau-10, Ogun-9, Osun-5, Jigawa-3 and Rivers-2.

    NCDC has so far tested 952,975 persons since the first confirmed case relating to the COVID-19 pandemic was announced in Feb. 27, 2020.

    It said that a multi-sectoral national emergency operations centre (EOC), activated at Level 3, continued to coordinate the national response activities.

    In summary, NCDC On the 2nd of January 2021, 576 new confirmed cases and 8 deaths were recorded in Nigeria.

    Till date, 89,163 cases have been confirmed, 74,789 cases have been discharged and 1,302 deaths have been recorded in 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.
