Last week, the streaming service announced six new upcoming
projects from Barack and Michelle Obama's production company, Higher Ground
Productions — but they managed to keep one featuring Mrs. Obama herself a
secret.
The former first lady announced on Instagram that she’s
launching a children’s cooking program, called Waffles + Mochi. The premise?
Waffles and Mochi, two Muppets-esque puppets, dream of becoming chefs. One day,
they're hired by a magical supermarket. Then, the duo embark on a series of
far-flung adventures to discover new foods from around the world. They pick
potatoes in the Andes of Peru, try spices in Italy, and make miso in
Japan—finding plenty of friends along the way.
“In many ways, this show is an extension of my work to
support children’s health as First Lady—and to be quite honest, I wish a
program like this had been around when my girls were young,” Obama wrote on
Instagram. “I also know that this is a difficult time for so many families, and
I’m hopeful that this delightful show can bring a bit of light and laughter to
homes around the world.” According to Netflix, she will act as the grocery
store's friendly owner.
Waffles + Mochi is also partnering with the Partnership for
a Healthier America to deliver fresh fruits, produce, and other goods to
families in need so they can cook together during the pandemic.
The show starts streaming on March 16. Although it’s aimed
at children, she says parents will enjoy it too: “I know that adults will also
get plenty of laughs—and some tips for the kitchen.”
It’s just the latest undertaking for Obama, who is embarking
on an altruistic, activist career post-White House. Together with her husband,
Barack, she formed a production company, Higher Ground, that aims to promote
diverse voices and stories. (Their first documentary, American Factory, won an
Academy Award.) Over the summer she launched a podcast, and then of course
there’s her best-selling 2018 memoir, Becoming.
