    COVID-19: Nigeria Confirms 129 New Infections

    Nigeria saw 129 new cases of COVID-19 on Wednesday, raising the total number of infections in the country to 162,891.

    The additional cases reported today were found in 12 states and the Federal Capital Territory.

    Health authorities also confirmed one person have died after testing positive for the novel coronavirus.

    That means till date, 2,057 people have died in Nigeria since the outbreak began.

    In contrast, it has been reported that 116 people have recovered from the illness caused by coronavirus and were discharged on Wednesday. This include 62 community recoveries in Akwa Ibom and 16 in Ogun State managed in line with guidelines.

    The total number of recoveries in Nigeria is now 151,648 almost 93% of the country’s total caseload.

    Nigeria Centre for Disease Control made this known via its official Twitter handle.

    The 129 reported cases includes 46 in Lagos, 19 in Ondo, 14 in Nasarawa and 11 in Kaduna

    Also, Borno reported 9 cases, Bauchi reported 8, Akwa Ibom and FCT had 5 cases each, Jigawa confirmed 4, Plateau had 3, Bayelsa and Osun reported 2 cases each and Rivers with 1 case.

    Meanwhile, over 600,000 Nigerians have received their first dose of the Oxford-AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccines, according to the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA).

    As of Tuesday evening, 638,291 eligible Nigerians have been vaccinated in 35 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), according to the agency.

    Only Kogi State is yet to commence COVID-19 vaccination.

    Kogi was not supplied with the COVID-19 vaccines because their cold store is still under repairs following vandalisation during the EndSARS protest, the Executive Director of NPHCDA, Faisal Shuaib, said at a briefing.

    But the agency in a tweet on Monday said Mr Shuaib met with Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello, to resolve issues around vaccine storage and provision of security at the Cold Store.

    Vaccination update

    Lagos, the epicentre of the disease in Nigeria, has vaccinated 122, 714 people, the data shows. This makes it the highest in the country.

    Ogun has vaccinated 50,052 people, closely followed Kaduna with 43,601, Katsina- 36,075, Bauchi- 33,157 and Kwara- 28,681.

    The states with the lowest number of vaccinated people are Abia-225 and Taraba – 878.
