The Lagos State government is set to honour 13 public school teachers who have met the test of excellence of the State’s Merit Award with Sport Utility Vehicles (SUVs).

The 13 teachers to be honoured were among 23 semi-finalists selected from over 3,000 applications who entered for the award selection process captured under the State’s B.O.S Education Transformation Plan 2020.

Briefing journalists in Alausa, Ikeja, on Thursday, ahead of the grand-finale scheduled for Tuesday, March 30, 2021, the state Commissioner for Education, Folasade Adefisayo, disclosed that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu will be rewarding school teachers and administrators with 13 cars and consolation gifts.

Adefisayo described the effort as an initiative of the governor informed by the need to honour the sacrificial contributions of teachers in grooming characters in the society.

She stated that the recipients have been selected from primary, junior secondary and senior secondary schools, as well as technical colleges in the state, adding that the selection of nalists have been made through stringent evaluation criteria.

According to Adefisayo: “The contributions of teachers and school administrators to the development of a nation cannot be over-emphasised as the teaching profession is such a unique one because it involves dedication and strong efforts in managing development of children from diverse backgrounds to meet acceptable standards”.

She noted that Governor Sanwo-Olu had earlier presented a three-bedroom apartment to the Best Teacher and Best Principal for 2019, thereby encouraging the best hands to embrace the teaching profession as teachers are nurturers of a nation’s treasure.

The commissioner noted that towards accurate screening and selection of nominees, the state government inaugurated a nomination committee of private education administrators with a blend of public sector technocrats.

She stressed that the committee, led by the Chairperson Association of Private Educators in Nigeria, Lai Koiki, is responsible for selection and screening of all categories of winners for this year’s programme.

She disclosed that while 13 of the 23 semi finalists will be awarded with cars, others will be honoured with other consolation prizes.

The commissioner mentioned that the effort is borne out of the importance of giving teachers a sense of worth and encourage them to commit more to the profession.

According to her, the selection of the awardees followed very stringent processes of applicants who are public school teachers and screened by seasoned educationists, without interference from the State’s Ministry of Education under which the programme is placed.

The commissioner said the ceremony “will encourage the upcoming generation to take pride in teaching profession for a career.”

In her remarks, Koiki noted that records of experience during the screening processes revealed that contrary to popular sentiment against public school teachers, it was discovered that there were capable and competent professionals in public schools.

She mentioned that over 3,000 applicants were screened through online processes till the stage that led to the selection of the 23 semi finalists who appeared for physical interviews.

According to her, “The best of the best that applied would be awarded with 13 cars”, disclosing that all the 23 semi-finalists will be enrolled for a retreat in five-star hotels to enjoy all the luxuries while they would be trained to encourage them with the sense of dignity.

She remarked that the effort will go a long way in building the confidence of teachers and give them a sense of prestige.
