DKT Launches First In-Home Oral HIV Self-Test Kit- OraQuick

Nigeria has the second-largest HIV prevalence in the world with an estimated 1.9 million people living with HIV in Nigeria (USAIDS). Despite high HIV incidence rates in Nigeria, more than 50% of the population are not aware of their status. According to the National Demographic and Health Survey (NDHS), 7 in 10 women and 8 in 10 men have never been tested for HIV. Anticipated HIV stigma and discrimination, lack of confidentiality, fear of testing outcomes are prominent barriers affecting uptake of HIV testing in Nigeria.

To address these barriers that lead to low HIV testing outcomes, DKT launched the first in-home Oral HIV Self-Test Kit- OraQuick. OraQuick is an oral swap that detects antibodies to both HIV-1 and HIV-2 and provides a confidential in-home testing option with results in as little as 20 minutes. OraQuick offers privacy, ease of use, convenience, and early detection that leads to early treatment and better health outcomes. This potentially makes OraQuick a useful tool for improving HIV testing rates and access to care for individuals at risk of HIV who may not want to test in a clinical setting especially during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Another innovative strategy carried by DKT Nigeria is Medical Detailing of OraQuick to retail outlets such as pharmacies and drugstores. This involves the use of detailing aids, counselling cards, in-store visibility marketing materials to provide information on potential use, benefits, efficacy, and related information on OraQuick. The DKT Medical Sales Representative covering the Lagos Island area had an interesting experience during one of his visits to a pharmacy outlet. After an interactive detailing session and demonstration, the pharmacists promised to convey the information to management for decision making and possibly placing an order.

While the DKT Medical Sales Representative was concluding his visit, a client walked in, and upon sighting OraQuick, he jumped in excitement. He claimed that he has been looking for the product after using it in South Africa a few months back. Instantly, the client purchased two boxes of OraQuick, and immediately afterward, the pharmacist purchased 1 carton of OraQuick with a promise to restock in a couple of weeks.

DKT is leveraging on its extensive distribution network to place OraQuick in thousands of retail outlets and making it easily available and accessible. Thus, eliminating the issue of provider bias and further empowering youths to take charge of their sexual and reproductive health.

In order to enhance retail placement and reward pharmacies and drugstores that prominently display Oraquick, DKT is offering free Kiss condoms with every purchase of Oraquick.
