The pair clashed during the 2018 Final, which Madrid won
3-1, but the Real Madrid captain, Sergio Ramos appears to have been ruled out
of next week’s Champions League tie against Liverpool.
Ramos sustained a calf injury after appearing as a late
substitute in Spain’s World Cup qualifying win against Kosovo on Wednesday
night, meaning he will miss both legs of the tie and the home El Clasico on
April 10th.
Ramos also took to Instagram to confirm his injury.
The translation reads ;
“I’ve actually had a pretty rough couple of weeks. An intervention is always a sports and emotional break. Luckily, for a few days now I’ve been finding better, but in football as in life, bad luck also plays a role.”
“Yesterday, after the game, I stayed training on the pitch and noticed a puncture on the left twin. Got tested today and it’s confirmed I have a muscle injury.”
“If there’s something that hurts me is not being able to help the team in these games of maximum demand in which we play the season and also not being able to return on the pitch the love and energy you transmit to me. “
“I can’t so anything but speak frankly, work hard and cheer for the team with the soul.”
Ramos' lay-off is not only a blow to Madrid's European
ambitions but also their domestic hopes too, as their captain will also sit out
the latest iteration of the Classico, which is sandwiched between the two legs
against Liverpool.
With league leaders Atletico having suffered a significant
drop in form to open the door of the title race in La Liga since the turn of
the year, both Ronald Koeman's Blaugrana and Los Blancos are locked in a
three-way challenge.
Victory over second-place Barca would likely allow Madrid to
leapfrog them, providing they do not slip up in their first game back this
weekend against Eibar.
