The animal rights activist and zoo owner, who gained
notoriety as a sensational subject of Netflix’s wildly popular 2020 documentary
“Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem and Madness,” has launched her own cryptocurrency.
Baskin’s new digital currency, called $CAT, allows fans to
buy merchandise or online experiences from her Tampa, Florida-based Big Cat
Rescue animal sanctuary. Prices for what is described as a “fan token” start at
$5.
“I’m purring like a bobcat rolling in catnip,” the “Dancing
with the Stars” castoff wrote on Twitter Tuesday.
In a statement on the Big Cat Rescue website, Baskin said
she was investigating cryptocurrencies due to concerns about the volume of US
dollars being printed and distributed “with nothing to back them up.”
It continued: “Our new $CAT coin is not a currency for
investment,” she added, “but rather is a purr-ency of our fans to show their
love for the cats.”
Big Cat Rescue says it will also launch non-fungible tokens
in two weeks, and “future plans include a big cat metaverse for virtual visits
with the cats.”
