Cabrera, who reportedly denied all wrongdoing at trial, will
begin serving his sentence immediately after his sentence in a court in
Cordoba, Argentina. He has reportedly been accused of assaulting, threatening
and harassing Cecilia Torres Mana, his partner between 2016 and 2018.
Cabrera’s ex-wife, Silva Rivadero, and another former
partner, Micaela Escudero, have accused Cabrera of assault as well. Prosecutors
reportedly indicated Cabrera could face even more charges down the line:
“His situation is much more complex than this, he has other
charges for which there are arrest warrants too. There are other victims,”
prosecutor Laura Battistelli told TV channel Todo Noticias.
Cabrera was arrested by Interpol agents in Rio de Janeiro,
Brazil in January following a red notice against him by Interpol, a measure
taken to apprehend wanted international fugitives. Per the AP, Cabrera
allegedly traveled to the United States last July without seeking permission,
leading to the request for his arrest. He was later extradited to Argentina to
stand trial.
The prison sentence continues Cabrera's swift fall from
grace. The most successful golfer in Argentina's history, Cabrera recorded wins
at the 2007 U.S. Open and 2009 Masters with three more wins on the European
Tour. He has not won an individual tournament since the Greenbrier Classic in
2014.
