The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in Nigeria rose to 178,821
after the country's health officials reported 558 new cases in 15 states and the
Federal Capital Territory late Thursday amid government efforts to curb the
spread of the new variants.
However, 2 more deaths was recorded from the disease on Thursday
keeping the deaths toll at 2,141.
The total cumulative recoveries stand at 164,930 today with 44
patients recovered and discharged in the last 24 hours.
Infection rates have largely concentrated in Lagos,
Nigeria’s hardest hit city by the disease.
Health experts fear the rising numbers could put the nation
on the precipice of what could be another stretch of spread in infections amid
indications that the third wave is beginning.
Data released by the health officials shows that Lagos
topped the list with 376 infections, followed by Oyo with 33, Akwa-Ibom with 26
and FCT with 22 cases.
Imo reported 15 cases, Bayelsa and Ekiti had 13 cases each, Kano
with 12, Ogun and Plateau- had 11 cases.
Others with single digits are Delta-9, Jigawa-6, Rivers-4, Zamfara-4
Edo-2 and Ebonyi-1.
Today's report includes 0 cases from Kaduna, Nasarawa, Ondo,
and Osun States.
