The Manchester City boss has frequently
expressed his desire to move into the international game and the famous Selecao
are believed to be his dream option. After current manager Tite confirmed that
he will leave his post following the World Cup in Qatar, Marca report that the
Brazilian FA have sounded out Guardiola as his successor.
It is claimed that the former Barcelona
boss has been offered a four-year deal by the CBF, who are confident that they
can prise him away from the Etihad Stadium after initiating talks with Pere
Guardiola, Pep's brother and representative. As for when Guardiola could
actually head to South America, the Selecao may to have wait until the summer
of 2023, when his contract with the Citizens ends.
Brazil then hope to have Guardiola in
charge until at least the 2026 World Cup in the United States of America,
Canada and Mexico. The 51-year-old would also oversee the 2024 Copa America in
Ecuador, a competition which he name-checked when asked about the prospect of
international management.
"The next step will be a national
team, yes, if there's a chance," Guardiola declared at the beginning of
the season. "I must have a break after seven years (at City), I need to
stop to watch, learn from other players and maybe that is the road I will take.
… I would like to coach at the Euros, a Copa America, a World Cup."
When asked specifically about the iconic
Brazilian team, Guardiola added: "It is a fantastic national team. Brazil
is always a strong candidate or the favourite. It always was and it will always
be."
Back in January, however, the Catalan coach
admitted that he 'doesn't think about' future jobs ahead of City's draw at
Southampton. "I am not a guy to think much in the future when I have the
contract I have," Guardiola stated. "I am thinking about Southampton,
I am not good enough to think far away about my future because my future always
depends on results.
"That's why I am not concerned [about
the future] for any second. I feel protected here. I feel good, I feel
comfortable, they gave me everything. I like to work with these players.
Hopefully they like to work with us. That's all. Southampton, rest a little bit
and continue. At the end of the season we will see what happens."
Tite, on the other hand, has been crystal
clear about his future as Brazil boss by telling SporTV : "I'm going until
the end of the World Cup. I have no reason to lie here. I don't want to win any
way. I've won everything in my career, the only thing missing is the World
Cup."
