Aimed at celebrating diplomats, diplomacy and travel and tourism, the International Diplomacy Stableford Golf Tournament recently held its third edition at the IBB International Golf & Country Club, attended by approximately 20 embassies.
Among the embassies that participated in the annual
gathering of the golf diplomatic community were America, China, South Korea,
Britain, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Japan, Austria, Trinidad -and-Tobago, Austria,
France and others.
The tournament was started by HE Amb. Cul Jian Chun –
Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China, HE Amb. Kim Young-Chae –
Ambassador of South Korea, HE Amb. Wendell Delandro – Ambassador of Trinidad
and Tobago, HE Amb. Buba Tekune – Former Nigerian Ambassador to the Philippines,
HE Amb. Laraba Bhutto – Former Nigerian Ambassador to Cuba, HE Amb. Mohammed
Kangiwa – Former Minister/Head of the Immigration Section of the Nigerian High
Commission in London, HE Amb. Kayode Garrick – Former Minister of Economic and
Commercial Affairs at the Nigerian Embassy in Washington DC, and HE Amb. Adamu
Emozozo – Former Nigerian Ambassador to Brazil.
The tournament, which fielded around 88 players with around
50% of the players being foreigners, was shotgun start and Stableford point
format. Irma Steyn edged out Jumai Abdulai on the countdown with 35 Stableford
points to emerge victorious in the women’s category.
Emmanuel Adukwu recorded 41 stableford points, making him
the winner of the men’s handicap category 15-28. Otun Temitope surpassed Gambo Alli
with 39 stableford points on the countdown, to emerge second. With 1 point from
Stableford, O Igweh surpassed Ashley Smit’s 37 points to emerge victorious in
the handicap category 0-14.
For the women’s category, Joy Ikwue drove her closest shot
from the 12.1-foot pin to the pin. In the men’s category, Sameer Shukla won
closest to the pin at 7.1 feet away from the pin. Irma Steyn and O Igweh won
the Longest Drive with 153 meters and 246 meters respectively in the women’s
and men’s categories.
The winners were rewarded with business/economy class air
tickets from Air Peace, Rwandair, South African Airways, overnight vouchers
from Envoy Hotel Abuja, Hawthorn Suites by Wyndham and N200,000 (each) Cilantro
gift certificates offered by Pepsi.
The tournament also saw the launch of the Afri Diplomat
magazine. Afri Diplomat Magazine, which is an offshoot of the International
Diplomacy Stableford Golf Tournament, is a print and electronic medium
dedicated to promoting relevant personalities, events, happenings and topics
around the African diplomatic community. Its content covers travel, tourism,
consular services, diplomacy and the diaspora.
Speaking at the tournament, Run & Tour Africa Advisory
Managing Partner Prince Deji Ajomale-McWord said: “This is definitely the best
edition of this tournament so far, and we are very grateful to the individuals
and brands who participated as players and sponsors. We just can’t get enough
of the positive reviews we’ve received.
When asked if the Lagos leg would continue, Prince Deji
replied: “most definitely. It all started at Ikoyi Club 1938 in 2019 and we
intend to continue the tournament in the home of world harmony. Although we
will be making a few changes that will be revealed as the date approaches.”
