Africa Cares Tennis Challenge is Coming to South Africa!

South African tennis fans will be happy to hear that the Africa Cares Tennis Challenge event is back after being postponed due to COVID-19 in 2021.

What is set to be the biggest annual tennis tournament in Africa will be taking place on the 3rd and 4th of December 2022 at Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg. The two day tennis tournament will see both international and local tennis sensations showcase their talent on South African soil, for a good cause.  Some of the players who will be participating this year include two of the world’s top eight players Ons Jabeur and Simona Halep.

Ons is the first female from the African continent to make a grand slam final, and number 2 in the world after Iga Swiatek. Ranked as high as world No.2 by the Women’s Tennis Association, Tunisian professional player Ons Jabeur has had a great year reaching two back-to-back Grand Slam finals at Wimbledon and the US Open, respectively. So far, she has reached and won at least one WTA tournament from all the tiers (250, 500 & 1000), winning WTA 1000 Madrid Open in 2022 which saw her become the first African woman to win a WTA 1000 event.

Simona Halep, a 2-time grand slam winner has had a steady year finishing in the top 10 and qualifying for the WTA finals. Halep expressed her excitement to extend her knowledge when it comes to the phenomenal sport, and inspire young girls to take up the sport.

“As a tennis player I have been inspired by many and I am always pushed to my level best. So it’s definitely an honour to do the same through this tournament and inspire young ladies who hope to pursue this sport to extreme heights,” said Simona Halep.

Other tennis players who have been announced are Swiss multi-grand slam winner Martina Hingis, and Sloane Stephens - an American Tennis Professional who has five singles titles to her name, including her first Major at the 2017 US Open, will also be part of the line-up. The 29-year-old tennis superstar is also the founder of the Sloane Stephens Foundation with a primary goal of enhancing the quality of life for youth, through exposure to tennis as a basis for life.

Supporting these exceptional women will be upcoming South African tennis star Khololwam Montsi, who was part of the French Open Junior Tennis Champions at the age of 17,  who will be doubling up with German-Jamaican professional tennis player Dustin Brown, who rose to fame after beating Rafael Nadal in 2014 Halle Open. The two will be showcasing their speed, technique, and entertaining playing style, in support of women’s tennis.

More tennis players will be announced in the coming weeks. Tickets to the event are available for purchase on www.ticketpro.co.za.
