    Oso Afia: Afia TV Sheds Light on Africa’s Commercial Ecosystem, Features at iREP Int’l Documentary Film Festival 2023

    Afia TV, the first regional television in SouthEast Nigeria officially showcased its documentary titled Oso Afia- the documentary, at the iREP international Documentary Film Festival which took place in Lagos Nigeria on Friday 17th March 2023.

    The 31-minute documentary chronicles the Igbo traditional entrepreneurial system where middlemen known as ‘Onye Oso Afia’ connect customers and potential buyers to traders in exchange for a commission. The documentary sheds light on these middlemen who are majorly former apprentices and many of whom have not been adequately compensated or “settled” by their masters. As such, many of them embrace ‘Oso Afia’.

    The viewing experience had in attendance film and documentary lovers, notable Nollywood personalities including film maker Tunde Kelani as well as the founder of the iREP international Documentary Film Festival, Femi Odugbemi and Michel Deleen, Head of consular, Royal Netherlands embassy, Lagos.

    It was a time to reflect on Africa’s traditional commercial system and the mechanics that have preserved it from generation to generation.

    Speaking on the need for more African stories to be documented and be told, CEO of Afia TV, Emeka Mba Said.

    “For quite some time there has been an ongoing conversation among many Africans on the need to tell our stories. Beyond telling our stories, Africans need to document narratives around its unique traditional institutions and systems, and how they contribute to its existing ecosystems.”

    “The need to discover existing economic structures that work for Africans and how they contribute to the sustainability of its commercial sector is one of the inspirations behind the Oso Afia documentary.” Mba further stated.

    Afia TV is a satellite television, radio, and digital channel group based in Enugu, South East Nigeria, that focuses on business, culture, and lifestyle. It tells stories about the people of the southeast, their commerce, trade, art, culture and lifestyle. Offering viewers a fresh perspective and relevant insights to what is happening around the region.

    iREP international Documentary Film Festival provides a platform of awareness and expression for filmmakers who are creating socially relevant films to impact our world.
