Twenty-nine new indigent and brilliant students have joined 90 existing beneficiaries in various higher institutions across Lagos and Ogun states to enjoy the District Education and Welfare Endowment Fund (DEWEF) of the Rotary International, District 9110. At the presentation ceremony held at Rotary Centre, Ikeja, each beneficiary received N100, 000.
Speaking at the event, Chairman, DEWEF board, Dr. Michael
Cole, said since the government cannot do it alone, Rotarians contributed money
to give back to the society in many ways, including education.
He said: “Education is very key to us because the future of
our youths and the country is very crucial. This enabled the Rotaract club to
prepare youths for the future, equipping them with the ideals of rotary
four-way test in addition to financial support.”
The chairman, who is also President, Lagos Chamber of
Commerce and Industry, said beneficiaries must be indigent and brilliant
students of Lagos and Ogun States in their second year, with CGPA of 3.5 and
above.
The District Governor, Rotary International, District 9110,
Omotunde Lawson, said in addition to the scholarship, DEWEF also has an
empowerment programme where graduates are trained as entrepreneurs. She added
that since the scholarship award started 10 years ago, the district has not reneged
from awarding it to beneficiaries every year.
Chairman, DEWEF Scholarship, Prof. Akinola Akinlabi, said
about N13m would be expended on the scholarship this year. Akinlabi disclosed that 82 applicants scaled
through the first huddle and were sent to the West African Examinations Council
(WAEC) for an aptitude test. He added
that 32 passed, while 29 scaled through the final oral interview.
A parent, Mrs. Idowu Ademuyiwa thanked Rotary for the
gesture, while a beneficiary, Oyeniran Emmanuel, studying Sociology at the
University of Lagos (UNILAG) promised to study hard to ensure he remains
