According to Variety, the casting team held auditions
without scripts as the co-creator, and co-writer, Craig Mazin, was picketing
with his fellow Writers Guild of America members.
The other co-creator, creative director, and writer for the
series, Neil Druckmann, is also following strike guidelines and has stopped
working on Season 2.
The series has been hailed by critics as the best video game
adaptation of all time - pulling in more than 22 million viewers with its
premiere episode.
The first season followed the harrowing journey of Joel
(Pedro Pascal) and Ellie (Bella Ramsey) in a post-apocalyptic landscape ravaged
by the mutated Cordyceps virus and raked in 8.2 million viewers for the finale.
After the fungus decimated most of humanity, Joel took young
Ellie on a journey West in hopes that her mysterious immunity to the fungus
could lead to a cure of some kind.
The first season ended with a dramatic two-show conclusion
in March that featured guest appearances by the actors who portrayed Joel and
Ellie in the original video game - Troy Baker and Ashley Johnson.
HBO announced the hit series was renewed for a second
season, although fans could be left waiting more than two years for new
episodes.
Given that the show is based on an immensely popular PlayStation
game of the same name, viewers have a rough idea of what to expect in series
two when it finally reaches screens.
Series one focused on the events of the first version of the
video game, which was released in 2013, while the second season is expected to
delve into 2020's Part Two, set five years later.
Though Ellie will age from 14 to 19 years old, the creators
assured fans they want her 'spirit and soul' to remain in the role.
The creators confirmed they did not plan on recasting the
Game of Thrones star Ramsey's role for season two despite there being a
five-year time jump in the storyline.
Speaking about their plans for the hotly-anticipated second
series, Craig and Neil pointed out that Bella is already 19 years old - the
same age Ellie will be.
According to Entertainment Weekly, Neil said in a news
conference: 'The only way we would ever, ever consider re-casting Bella is if
she said, 'I don't want to work with you guys anymore.'
'And even then, we're not sure we would grant her that. We
might still force her to come back to season 2.'
Craig went on to say that although some aspects of the
second series will be the same as the video game, others will be 'radically
different' because they want the show to have its own identity.
There is no indication of when production may begin on the
second season, but the original plan was for filming to begin in early 2024 in
Vancouver.
