Olokun Festival, Lagos Highlights Importance of Cultural Heritage

With a reputation for being one of the most significant cultural events in Nigeria, the 2023 Olokun Festival is expected to surpass all previous editions in scope and impact. The event will take place on August 26.

It will be a captivating display of the customs, traditions, and artistic expressions, showcasing the beauty and diversity of Yoruba culture.

The Lagos State Government has underscored the importance of appropriate authorities in promoting the Yoruba cultural heritage.

The state, through the Ministry of Tourism, said this ahead of the oncoming 2023 Olokun festival scheduled to hold in Lagos, with the theme, ‘Entertainment is Culture’.

Speaking with the media in Lagos recently, Chief host and convener for the Olokun Festival, Amb. Lara Fashola, emphasised that the festival would showcase how entertainment, in all its forms, plays a pivotal role in preserving and propagating cultural heritage.

She said: “We aim to demonstrate how the elements of arts, music, dance, and storytelling with our rich Yoruba heritage, have been integral in passing down our traditions through generations. By embracing the joy and creativity of entertainment, we strengthen our collective identity and keep our culture alive.”

Fashola however noted that the festival, which will be an extraordinary celebration, would envision an expansion of the frontiers of Yoruba cultural heritage. “This year’s edition seeks to promote and boost the richness of our people’s culture grandly and remarkably. Our goal is to create an unforgettable celebration that will leave a lasting impact on the hearts and minds of everyone present.”

The festival’s guest list, she added includes the Royal Father of the day, Ooni Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, other cultural icons, traditional rulers, international tourists, and stakeholders from various industries, both private and public sectors. “It will serve as a melting pot for cultural exchange, fostering a deeper appreciation for Nigeria’s heritage and inspiring collaboration between diverse communities,” she said.

In addition, opportunities for brand sponsorship and partnership are now open, providing organizations and companies with a chance to align themselves with this prestigious cultural event.

By sponsoring or partnering with the festival, brands can gain significant visibility, connect with diverse audiences, and contribute to the preservation and celebration of Yoruba traditions.
