Presidency Goofs Again Over NASDAQ Claim

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s spokesman has goofed again over claims that Tinubu was the first African leader to ring the closing bell at NASDAQ in New York.

Former President of Tanzania, Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete holds the honour. He rang the bell, according to Fact checkers in 2011.

Kikwete, who ruled Tanzania between 2005 and 2015, rang the bell in honour of Global Health Commitments for Women’s Health and Women’s Cancers.

As NASDAQ’s official website reported the event on its website:

“Global Health Leaders will announce Global Health Commitments for Women’s Health and Women’s Cancers at the NASDAQ MarketSite in New York City’s Times Square.

“In honour of the occasion, President Kikwete of Tanzania, First Ladies and Health Ministers, and Global Health Leaders will officially ring The NASDAQ Stock Market Closing Bell.”

The Aso Rock Media department has now walked back the claim that Tinubu was the first to do so, just like it took back the claim that the United Arab Emirates had lifted the visa ban on Nigerians after a bliateral meeting between Tinubu and UAE President Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

On Wednesday, the media department acknowledged its NASDAQ goof, saying it had relied on the information provided by a third-party event organiser.

“We have since found out that this information is incorrect as a former African leader has indeed had the privilege. This error is sincerely regretted”, the media and publicity department said.

On Wednesday, spokesman of President Tinubu, Ajuri Ngelale in a statement said the US National Association of Securities Dealers Automatic Quotation System (NASDAQ),invited President Tinubu to ring the closing bell, “making him the first African President to ever receive the honour”.

“The President, surrounded by Nigerian business leaders and officials of the Nigerian Stock Exchange, in trademark fashion, did not fail to seize the opportunity presented by the historic moment to boldly advance his foreign investment push as he stood, live, in front of financial markets at the famous stock exchange.

“”It’s a great honour for me to be here. I am happy to bring Nigeria to your doorsteps and I am honoured that we are here today with a bubbling Nigerian stock market that will evolve in the West African sub-region. The greatest economy in Africa is Nigeria, there is an immense opportunity in Nigeria where you can invest your money without fear,” the President said.

The President noted that his government continues to address longstanding problems and impediments, such as his work to restore and unify the foreign exchange rate market to a stable and trustworthy level, allowing new investors to seamlessly bring their money into the country, free of worries about whether or not they can take their money out at any point in time.

“You’re free to take in your money and bring out your money. I count on you to invest in Nigeria,” the President said.

On September 21, 2011, President Kikwete of Tanzania rang the closing bell at NASDAQ in the presence of First Ladies Health Ministers, and Global Health Leaders.

    President Kikwete rang the bell

Here’s an excerpt from NASDAQ’s official website ahead of the bell-ringing ceremony by the Tanzanian President:

“Global Health Leaders will announce Global Health Commitments for Women’s Health and Women’s Cancers at the NASDAQ MarketSite in New York City’s Times Square.

In honour of the occasion, President Kikwete of Tanzania, First Ladies and Health Ministers, and Global Health Leaders will officially ring The NASDAQ Stock Market Closing Bell.”

    The Verdict

Based on available information, President Bola Tinubu is not the first African President to ring the closing bell at NASDAQ Stock Exchange.
