Filmoneng, a prominent West African movie distribution
company renowned for successful releases such as “A Tribe Called Judah” and “Omo
Ghetto The Saga,” proudly announces the remarkable achievement of “Lakatabu.”
Premiering on June 21, 2024, the film swiftly ascended to become one of the
most triumphant Nollywood releases of the year.
As per the Cinema Exhibitors Association of Nigeria (CEAN), “Lakatabu”
emerged as the highest-grossing Nollywood film during the period of June 21 to
June 27, 2024. Notably, it garnered approximately N65 million in revenue solely
within that week. This impressive performance was further underscored by
Nairametrics, which reported that the film secured N47 million during its
opening weekend, accompanied by over 11,000 admissions. This achievement marked
the third-highest opening of 2024.
“Lakatabu” features Odunlade Adekola, a prominent Nigerian
actor renowned for his box office success in 2023. His portrayal of an armed
robber with supernatural abilities has garnered significant audience interest.
Adekola’s prior works, including “Orisa,” which achieved a gross revenue of
N127 million, demonstrate his consistent commercial appeal and versatility
across comedic and dramatic roles.
The movie’s cast includes renowned actors Adebayo Salami,
Adedimeji Lateef, and Akin Lewis. “Lakatabu” delves into the protagonist’s
journey as he instills fear in communities and encounters threats from
competitors, resulting in a compelling narrative rich in suspense and cultural
significance.
The recent success of ”Lakatabu” is indicative of a growing
trend in Nigerian cinemas, where epic and indigenous films are gaining
significant traction. Films such as Kayode Kasum’s “Ajosepo,” which achieved a
gross revenue of over N200 million, exemplify this shift in audience
preferences towards locally-inspired storytelling.
