During the Leagues Cup match held on Sunday, Nigerian forward Willy Agada successfully scored the decisive goal in the 76th minute, resulting in a 2-1 victory for Sporting Kansas City against the visiting team from Chicago.
Greek forward Georgios Koutsias provided the Fire with an
early advantage in the 22nd minute, however, American defender
Robert Castellanos from Kansas City managed to equalize in the 39th
minute.
The tournament, which draws inspiration from the World Cup,
comprises teams from Major League Soccer (MLS) and Mexico’s Liga MX. Each
group, consisting of three teams, advances two teams to the subsequent knockout
rounds.
In the opening match, the host team, New York City FC,
narrowly defeated Mexico’s Queretaro 4-3 on penalties after a goalless draw. As
a result, New York City FC secures two points in the group standings, while
Queretaro earns one point. FC Cincinnati has yet to play its first match in the
tournament.
The conclusion of the first round of group matches occurred
on Sunday, with the second phase commencing on Tuesday.
The reigning champion, Inter Miami, emerged victorious in
their group opener on Saturday against Puebla, despite the absence of their
star player, Lionel Messi, due to an injury. Puebla and Tigres UANL will face
off in Houston on Wednesday, while Miami will conclude their group stage by
playing Tigres on Saturday.
