Mr. Tunji Bello has formally taken on the position of Executive Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) today.
The Senate confirmed Mr. Bello Olatunji’s appointment as
Chief Executive Officer and Executive Vice Chairman of the FCCPC on Tuesday.
In June, President Bola Tinubu approved the appointment of
Mr. Bello as the new FCCPC Boss, succeeding Babatunde Irukera, who was removed
in January 2024.
The Senate confirmed Bello’s appointment after considering
the report presented by Senator Suleiman Sadiq, representing Kwara North,
during the plenary session on Tuesday.
The President anticipates that the newly appointed Chief
Executive Officer of the agency will effectively fulfill the Commission’s
mandate to safeguard and advance the interests and well-being of Nigerian
consumers. Additionally, the CEO is expected to implement measures that ensure
the safety and quality of goods and services.
Mr. Bello, a distinguished legal professional, accomplished
administrator, and esteemed journalist, holds the esteemed position of former
Secretary to the Lagos State Government. He possesses a Master’s degree in
International Law and Diplomacy from the prestigious University of Lagos, where
he also obtained his law degree. Called to the Nigerian Bar in 2002, Mr. Bello
commenced his illustrious career in journalism at Concord Newspapers in 1985.
Throughout his tenure, he held various prominent positions, including Group
Political Editor, Sunday Concord Editor, and Editor of National Concord.
Recognized for his exceptional contributions, Mr. Bello was
bestowed with the prestigious US Alfred Friendly Press Fellowship. In 2001, he
was appointed Chairman of the Editorial Board of THISDAY Newspapers, where he
continues to demonstrate his expertise and leadership in the media industry.
He also held the position of Commissioner for Environment
under various administrations in Lagos State.
Mr. Bello brings a wealth of experience to the FCCPC, and we
are confident in his ability to be a strong advocate for fair competition and
consumer protection in Nigeria.
Mr. Bello was warmly welcomed to the Commission by Mr. Adamu
Abdullahi, Executive Commissioner of Operations, and Mr. Kola Alabi, Executive
Commissioner of Corporate Services.
Prior to Mr. Bello’s arrival, Mr. Abdullahi capably served
as the acting chief executive of the Commission.
Before settling into his office, Mr. Bello took the time to
familiarize himself with the Commission’s staff by making rounds throughout the
organization.
