The event, scheduled for Monday, July 15th, will
take place at the UniLag Main Auditorium. The program will commence at 3:00
p.m.
The Music Director, Professor Albert Oikelome, described
Africa Sings as a comprehensive concert program presented by the Department of
Creative Arts at the University of Lagos. This program is dedicated to
showcasing the exceptional talents of our students in choral music, as well as
celebrating the rich musical heritage of Africa and the diaspora.
In reference to the musical heritage of Nigeria, the esteemed music scholar emphasized that Nigeria, being the most populous nation in Africa, is blessed with a rich musical tradition that encompasses both popular and traditional genres. Over the years, concerted efforts have been undertaken to safeguard these musical forms from the threat of extinction.
“Consequently, the concert aims to revitalize classic songs
within the contemporary context. Each group rekindles the traditional genres
through choral arrangements and subsequently endeavors to reconfigure them with
trending contemporary musical rhythms”.
