The demand for a bribe by an airport immigration officer has sparked significant concerns.

Comptroller General, Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) Kemi Nandap

The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has placed an Assistant Superintendent of Immigration II (ASI II) on suspension due to allegations of soliciting bribes from a traveler.

This information was conveyed by the Comptroller General of NIS, Kemi Nandap, through a statement released by the Service's Public Relations Officer, Mr. Kenneth Udo, on Thursday in Abuja.

Nandap stated that the officer's actions, which were recorded in a video that has been widely shared on social media, do not align with the professional values and ethics upheld by the NIS.

She strongly condemned the alleged misconduct, emphasizing that it jeopardizes the ongoing reforms intended to improve service standards.

Furthermore, she confirmed that the officer has been suspended indefinitely while disciplinary procedures are conducted, in accordance with legal and Public Service Rules.

Nandap noted that the NIS had received a video circulating on social media titled “This is how immigration officers treat tourists in Nigeria,” which depicts one of its officers soliciting financial rewards from a traveler.

“This disgraceful act is not a representation of our commitment to hospitality, reception, and courtesy.

“As a result, the officer in question has been indefinitely suspended pending the outcome of disciplinary procedures,” she said.

The National Intelligence Service (NIS) director reaffirmed the organization’s dedication to identifying and eliminating corrupt individuals within its ranks, adhering to its strict anti-corruption policy.

The comptroller general further assured stakeholders that the NIS remains committed to delivering exceptional services, aligning with the Federal Government’s “Renewed Hope Agenda.”

Additionally, the director mentioned the ongoing installation of electronic gates (e-gates) at all international airports to enhance passenger travel experiences and prevent incidents similar to the one involving the suspended officer.

The public Is strongly encouraged to report any instances of misconduct or corruption involving NIS officers to the appropriate authorities.
