The United States women’s basketball team will compete against Nigeria in the knockout stage of the Olympic women’s basketball tournament.
The reigning champions, the United States, will face the
history-making Nigerian team in the quarterfinals of the women’s basketball
competition at the Paris Olympics on Wednesday, as determined by the draw
conducted on Sunday.
The Nigerian team has achieved a significant milestone by
becoming the first African nation to reach the last eight of an Olympic
basketball tournament, encompassing both men’s and women’s competitions.
However, they will face a formidable challenge against the
American team, which has demonstrated dominance by securing the last seven
titles.
Nigeria secured their position in the quarterfinals by
defeating Canada with a score of 79-70 on Sunday. Concurrently, the United
States team emerged victorious against Germany with a score of 87-68, with
notable contributions from Jackie Young, who scored 19 points, and A’ja Wilson,
who contributed 14 points.
The host nation, France, which achieved the bronze medal at
the Tokyo Games three years ago, will compete against Germany, while Spain will
face Belgium.
The opening match on Wednesday will feature Serbia against
Australia.
The knockout stages of both the men’s and women’s basketball
tournaments will take place in Paris, following the conclusion of the group
stage matches held near the northern city of Lille.
